Rock Harbor Golf Course, Rock Course

I find Rock Harbor both interesting and challenging. Some very cool holes on hillsides, there is an "island" green. I understand they have added new holes which I have yet to play. Last time I played I rememeber thinking it was a littly pricey, but it was loads of fun...

We called on a Friday for the earliest tee time available on the following Tuesday, and got the second starting time. Only one of the four of us had played the course since they had expanded the number of holes to 36. Although there are a couple of shared greens, they are massive. One green measured over 100 yards from one end to the other...The greens were fast and true, and while there were a few unrepaired bruises from lazy or ignorant golfers, they were the best greens I've ever seen at a semi-private course. There are numerous blind shots, but if you cart ahead, you can figure out where you're supposed to go. Like they people who work at Rock Harbor say, "You'll like it a whole lot better the second time around." Three of us are 12-14 handicappers, and we all scored within our handicaps, even with an eight or couple of sevens (primarily from not knowing where to hit the damn ball and ending up OB or unplayable lies.) I like the terrain, some flat holes and some uphills and some downhills. Water is not a big problem but this is part of a reclaimed quarry and apple orchard and there these two parking lot-size areas with gravel dust (not really bunkers because you can drive through them) along the left side of two fairways which are a bitch for hookers. I didn't get in either but two of the others did and really had no problem hitting a good second shot into the the green. But it's still puzzling why they have them...We plan to go back in the fall, even though it's a 150-plus-mile round trip for us, and we have memberships at our own club.

We stumbled onto this course while driving Rte. 81 through Virginia. The staff was super friendly and quickly got us out to play. The course is in wonderful shape, very scenic and challenging. Although there are several blind shots and lots of water. The rangers were out and about and kept the pace of play moving. Definitely worth the 4.9 mile drive from Rte. 81 and very reasonably priced. We really enjoyed the course and the very friendly staff.
